Why is every Indian proud of Kalpana Chawla?

Kalpana Chawla was born in Karnal, India. She earned a doctorate in aerospace engineering from the University of Colorado in 1988. She did India proud by becoming the first Indian woman to go into space. She was selected by the National Aeronautic and Space Administration or NASA, from thousands of candidates.

Kalpana went as a mission specialist on a space shuttle named Columbia. In 2003, she got another opportunity to go into space- again as a mission specialist in the seven-member crew. But tragically, this time the Columbia broke up on re-entry into the Earth's Atmosphere.

All its seven members perished. The accident was the second major disaster for the space shuttle programme at NASA..

Professor M.G.K.Menon has played a key role in the development of science and technology in India.

   The Tata Institute of Fundamental Research that was founded by Dr.Homi Bhabha in 1945, was nurtured by him, and has become one of the finest institutions in the world in this field. Prof.Menon experimented with cosmic rays to explore the properties of fundamental particles
.
        Prof.Menon has been Director of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Bombay, Chairman of the Commission for Additional Sources of Energy, and Secretary to the Government of India for 12 years. He was also Chairman of ISRO, Director General of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, and of the Defense Research and Development Organization. He even has an asteroid named after him-the asteroid Gokumenon!

Who is the current Chairman of ISRO?

Dr.K.Radhakrishnan is the current Chairman of ISRO. He started his career in 1971 as an avionics engineer at VSSC. He has held many important positions in the organization, and has left his mark of excellence in every field that he was involved in.

    As the Director of the Vikram Sarabhai Space Center, Thiruvananthapuram, since December 2007, Dr.Radhakrishnan led a team of about 4500 professionals. He was a key person in the Chandrayaan-1 mission, responsible for the realization of the PSLV C-11 launch vehicle. Under his stewardship, five successful launches of Polar Satellite Launch Vehicles were realized and 20 spacecrafts including Chandrayaan-1 were taken to the desired orbits precisely.

  As the Director of the National Remote Sensing Agency, Dr.Radhakrishnan provided visionary leadership to a team of 1000 professionals.

Why is G. madhavan Nair considered one of the leading space scientists in India?

G. Madhavan Nair, an engineer, joined the Thumba Equatorial Rocket Launching Station in 1967, where his boss was Abdul Kalam. When Kalam was made project direction of SLV-3. His next big challenge came when he was made project director for building the PSLV.

Madhavan Nair became Chariman, Indian Space Research organization in 2003, and has presided over one of the Institution's most successful periods in its history. Apart from consolidating space applications that have impacted the common man such as telemedicine and tele-education, he is credited with developing Chadrayaan, India's first moon mission.

His focus has always been to achieve self- reliance areas of high technology.
