Excessive, unprotected sunbathing can cause skin cancer. The sun's ultraviolet B rays damage DNA in skin cells where cancer can develop, even many years later. On the other hand, exposure to a sensible amount of sunlight-between 10 and 15 minutes a day is all that is required-is good for human health in a number of ways, including providing some protection against several types of cancer. This is because the ultraviolet B rays help skin cells to produce vitamin D. Vitamin D encourages bone development and reduces the risk of breast, intestinal and prostate cancer, as well as a number of other types of cancer.
