In principle, outer space is already open to ordinary people-the only requirement being great wealth. Each year the Russian space agency conveys one or two paying space tourists to the International Space Station for a week-long stay. However, most of US would need to save for a long time before we could pay the US $22million fee needed for that particular package holiday. Would –be space tourists must also complete a six-month training program. For those who would be satisfied with a couple of minutes of weightlessness at an altitude of just over 100km, there will soon be a cheaper alternative that will only require an investment of around US $212,000. The British Company Virgin Galactic is offering rocket flights to the edge of space, with the first flights expected to take place in 2009. Bookings are now open, but you will need a US $22,000 deposit.
