What do we know about forests in the United States?

The distribution of forest types in North America is primarily influenced by latitude. Boreal forests are found at the highest latitudes, extensively in Canada and Alaska, and are mostly comprised of conifers or evergreensm such as spruce and pines. Temparature forests are at the mid- latitudes in North America, and consists of pure stands and mixtures of conifers, and deciduous species like oaks and maples. Plantations comprise less than two percent of the forests of North America.

The United States has 33 percent of its land area in forests. The huge areas of forests in the US are the home of species like elk, buffalo,and wolves. Among the US's most important forests are the Sierra Nevada conifer forests. They are home to a great variety of conifers including the Giant Sequoia, the world's largest tree.
