Why does current flow in water?

       In electrolytes-water and other liquids containing dissolved salts-it is charged atoms or molecules called ions, rather than electrons, that provide electric conductivity. These charged molecules carry too few or too many electrons, which is why they are drawn towards electrodes in the water connected to an external circuit.
