what are photochemical reactions?

Filled under:

photochemical reaction

Any reason that takes place only in the presence of light is known as photo chemical reaction. The light may be visible light, infrared radiation, or ultraviolet radiation. Many photo chemical reactions take place in nature, and the best example is photosynthesis. In photosynthesis, green plants make food using sunlight to combine carbon dioxide and water. Therefore, plants convert light energy into the chemical energy of food. Photo chemical changes are also part of industrial processes, such as the formation of images in photography. When a picture is taken, some of the silver salts on the photographic film absorb light, and chemically change into metallic silver, which produces a dark image on the negative when the film is developed.

We know that light is made of photons travelling at different wavelengths which make up different colors of the spectrum. But not all wavelengths will trigger a specific photo chemical reaction. For example, a photon of violet light has highest frequency, and hence, the highest energy. Hence, a reaction which is initiated by violet light may not be initiated by red, blue or other wavelengths of light. Another interesting fact is that some substances do not react directly when exposed to light, but the addition of another subtance will trigger a photo chemical reaction.

Why is the theory of Relativity related to light?

Filled under:

theory of light

In March 1905, Albert Einstein, one of the greatest scientific minds of all time, explained the Quantum Theory of Light. According to this theory, light exists as tiny particles, which he called photons. Along with another scientific, Max Plank, Einstein proposed one of the most revolutionary ideas in twentieth century physics- that we live in a universe built out of tiny, discrete chunks of energy and matter.

Later, in 1905, he published his Theory of Special Relativity. In this theory, he extended Galileo's principle of relativity, so that, it accounted for the constant speed of light. Einstein saw light as both a wave and a particle. He showed that nothing can move faster than light in a vacuum, and that the speed of light in a vacuum is always the same. His work revolutionized the way scientists viewed the world, and had a tremendous impact in the filed of physics especially in studies on light.

The dirt stimulate the immune system?

Filled under:

Parents faced with a muddy spectacle like this can feel comforted by the knowledge that at least playing in the dirt helps bolster their offspring's immune system.

In the first years of life, the human immune system has to be exercised through contact with  germs in the environment. This is how it learns to tolerate harmless microbes and develop immunity to those that might cause dangerous infections. A relatively germ-free environment means that the immune system does not develop to the full. This is why children who live in cities suffer from more  allergies than those who grow up on farms. Dust and dirt contain bacteria, fungi and cell particles that stimulate the immune system. But we should not forget that the hygiene measures we take for ganged offer protection against dangerous infections. In the home, especially, a sensible level of hygiene is essential, but there is no real need for disinfectant.

How does vaccine protect against the cancer

Filled under:

A general vaccine against cancer on the same lines as those used against influenza or other infectious diseases is not possible. This is because there are so many different forms of cancer that there can be no one single overall immunization. What is feasible, however, is inoculation against infections which increase the risk of certain types of cancer. People can now be vaccinated against carcinogenic wart viruses. These reduce the risk of liver and cervical cancer.

Another way of immunizing against cancer is with a form of immune therapy in which, after the disease has broken out, the patient's immune system can be activated to fight against the cancer cells. The aim is to try to increase the number of immune cells which are able to recognize cancer cells from their external characteristics, and then destroy them.

Does environmental pollution reduces the male fertility?

Filled under:

The numbers of sperm in the semen of young men in industrialized countries has been declining for the past 50 years or so, and this has led to reduced fertility. Research has revealed the presence of a wide range of environmental pollutants in human blood, and the results of animal tests suggest that certain chemicals with hormone-like effects could be causing problems. The chemicals in question are used in industry, and include cleaning agents, synthetic softeners and flame retardants, as well as pesticides and pharmaceutical residues. Once they are released into the environment these substances can enter the body in water or food or through contact with the skin. More than 100 of such chemicals have been found to have a hormonal effect that can influence the development of the male fetus. It is also the case that increases levels of pollutants in the blood of mothers has been linked to a risk of malformed sex organs and a reduction in sperm quality.
