Are silicon chips always used in computers?

Filled under:

All computers currently on the market have silicon chips as their key components. However, the silicon age is nearing its end-at least as regards the most powerful chips. The future could see the computing function of silicon being taken on by the individual atoms and molecules of a wide variety of materials, including carbon and genome strings. Exactly which material will emerge as most promising we don't yet know.
Almost 100% pure silicon is used in the production of microchips.
