How far can we see into space

 

 

The most distance object visible to the naked eye is the Andromeda Galaxy, some 2.5 million light-years away from Earth. it is a spiral galaxy similar to the Milky way- the galaxy in which we live. While the Andromeda Galaxy may seem very remote, using modern telescopes astronomers can see galaxies that are an incredible 13 billion light-years away. At this distance, however, observers come up against an insurmountable barrier.This is because every time we look into space we are simultaneously looking back into the history of the cosmos. When we look at a galaxy 13 billion light-years away, we are seeing it as it looked when light from it left on its journey, 13 billion years ago. At that time- close to the origin of the universe - the first galaxies had only just been formed. Before that, there was nothing to see- which means that we cannot see any deeper into space.
