The word planet means 'wanderer'. Planets seem to wander in the night sky against a background of stars. All the eight major planets of our solar system rotate round the Sun. The path of a planet is known its orbit.
The major planets in our solar system are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars are called Inner Planets, because of their nearness to the Sun. Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune are called Outer planets.
